Job summary
Security Officer at Kitutu Masaba Technical & Vocational College
About this role
This Security Guard position is open to applicants who have completed secondary education and are physically fit. Previous experience in security work is an added advantage, although the requirements also place importance on good conduct, communication and the ability to interact appropriately with people on the premises.
What the Work Looks Like
The main responsibility will be safeguarding the institution's premises. This means remaining attentive to activity around the facility and taking the necessary steps to protect the property and maintain a secure environment.
The guard will be expected to follow the institution's security procedures and regulations while carrying out daily duties. These procedures provide the framework for handling access, patrols and security-related situations.
Because security work can involve dealing with employees, visitors and other people using the institution's facilities, professionalism will matter. A guard needs to communicate clearly and interact with people respectfully while still enforcing the required security measures.
Controlling Access to the Premises
One of the important duties will be monitoring and controlling access to the institution.
The guard will help ensure that people entering or leaving the premises follow the required security arrangements. This requires attention to activity at access points and the ability to identify situations that may require further attention.
Access control is an important part of preventing unauthorised entry and maintaining order within an institution. The guard will therefore need to remain alert rather than simply allowing normal activity to continue without observation.
The responsibility also calls for good interpersonal skills because access control can involve regular interaction with people.
Regular Patrols and Reporting
The job also includes conducting routine patrols around the institution's premises.
Patrols provide an opportunity to observe different areas of the facility and identify anything unusual. The guard will need to remain observant while moving through the designated areas and report security incidents when they occur.
Reporting is an important part of the job. A security incident should not simply be noticed and ignored. Relevant information needs to be communicated through the appropriate channels so that the institution can respond accordingly.
The ability to notice unusual activity and communicate information clearly will therefore be useful in the position.
Following Institutional Security Procedures
The institution will have established procedures and regulations covering security matters, and the guard will be expected to enforce them.
This requires consistency. Security procedures are designed to establish clear expectations for access, movement around the premises and the handling of security situations.
The guard must therefore be familiar with the applicable procedures and apply them appropriately while performing daily duties.
There may also be additional security-related responsibilities assigned from time to time. The successful applicant should be prepared to handle these duties as part of the wider security function.
What Applicants Need
The minimum academic requirement is a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of D (Plain).
Applicants must also be physically fit and of good conduct. A certificate of good conduct is specifically required.
Previous experience in security services will be an added advantage. Candidates who have already worked in security may therefore have useful practical exposure to access control, patrol duties, reporting and enforcement of security procedures.
However, the requirements also highlight communication and interpersonal skills. Security work involves interacting with different people, meaning the ability to communicate appropriately is important alongside physical fitness and alertness.
Conduct and Professional Behaviour
Good conduct is an important requirement for this position because the security guard will be entrusted with protecting an institution's premises.
Applicants must provide a certificate of good conduct, demonstrating the importance placed on personal conduct for the role.
Professional behaviour will also be relevant during daily interactions. A security guard may have to enforce institutional rules while dealing with employees, visitors and other individuals. Being able to remain respectful and communicate clearly can help maintain order while carrying out those responsibilities.
A Hands-On Security Position
The position is centred on practical security work rather than administrative duties. Much of the responsibility involves being present on the premises, monitoring access, carrying out patrols and responding appropriately to security incidents.
The guard will also enforce the institution's security procedures and take on other related duties when assigned.
Applicants should therefore be prepared for a role that requires physical presence, alertness and consistency. Previous security experience can be useful, but the core requirements focus on education, physical fitness, good conduct and communication ability.
For someone who meets the KCSE requirement, has a valid certificate of good conduct and is capable of maintaining a professional presence, this role provides an opportunity to work directly in institutional security and help maintain a safe and controlled environment.
Application
Interested and qualified candidates should submit their application letter, a detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), copies of academic and professional certificates, National Identity Card, and contacts of at least two professional referees.
