Senior Communications Specialist
About the Role
ChristianaCare is seeking an experienced communications professional to join its External Affairs Communications Team as a Senior Communications Specialist. The successful candidate will help strengthen the organization’s reputation, visibility, and growth through strategic communications, media relations, and compelling storytelling.
This role will work closely with leaders, clinical specialists, marketing teams, and other stakeholders to develop communications strategies supporting clinical service lines and major organizational initiatives. The position requires strong news judgment, exceptional writing and editing abilities, strategic thinking, sound decision-making, and the ability to turn complex healthcare and organizational information into clear and engaging messages for different audiences.
The successful candidate will help identify opportunities for media coverage, executive visibility, thought leadership, internal alignment, and integrated storytelling across multiple platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a trusted communications adviser to leaders overseeing assigned clinical service lines and strategic growth programs.
Create and execute integrated communications strategies that support organizational priorities, reputation, patient engagement, community relationships, and growth.
Help provide communities with timely, accurate, and accessible healthcare information.
Lead proactive media relations activities by identifying compelling stories, developing media approaches, preparing pitches and press releases, briefing spokespeople, arranging interviews, and responding to media requests.
Develop and maintain productive relationships with local, regional, and national journalists, particularly those covering healthcare, business, consumer issues, communities, and relevant industries.
Convert complex clinical, research, operational, and strategic subjects into accurate and engaging communications suitable for varied audiences.
Produce press releases, announcements, media statements, talking points, Q&As, speeches, presentations, website content, social media posts, articles, and other communication materials.
Work closely with Marketing, Digital and Creative Services, Editorial, Social Media, Government Affairs, Philanthropy, Operations, and other departments to coordinate effective communications.
Identify opportunities to increase the visibility of organizational leaders and subject matter experts through media interviews, speaking engagements, awards, thought leadership, and editorial opportunities.
Provide communications support for new services, programs, partnerships, access initiatives, innovative care models, and other strategic projects.
Apply performance data, audience insights, and communications metrics to assess results and improve future strategies.
Monitor healthcare developments, media coverage, community concerns, and competitive activity to identify emerging opportunities and potential communications risks.
Ensure messaging consistently reflects ChristianaCare’s mission, values, brand identity, and commitment to compassionate and innovative community service.
Contribute actively to the goals and priorities of the External Affairs Communications Team.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required.
At least 10 years of experience in public relations, communications, journalism, media relations, or a closely related field.
Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing, or a related discipline preferred.
Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver strategic communications and public relations programs aligned with organizational objectives.
Strong background in media relations, including identifying stories, pitching journalists, preparing organizational spokespeople, coordinating interviews, and handling media inquiries.
Proven writing and editing experience across press releases, news and feature articles, statements, talking points, presentations, speeches, websites, social media, and other communications formats.
Experience partnering with executives, physicians, clinical specialists, and other senior-level experts.
Healthcare communications experience is preferred, particularly within clinical programs, hospitals, ambulatory services, population health, research, innovation, or related healthcare environments.
Experience using data and performance insights to shape communications strategies and assess campaign effectiveness.

Compensation
Annual salary range: $79,497.60 - $127,212.80.
The final compensation offered will depend on factors such as qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and how they align with the requirements of the position.
