Sports Coordinator Job Description
1. Job Summary
The Sports Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and monitoring all sports activities within the university. The role focuses on promoting student participation in sports, ensuring that sports programs are implemented effectively, and maintaining high standards of sports management. The successful candidate will work closely with students, coaches, university staff, and other stakeholders to support athletic development, manage sports facilities and equipment, and contribute to the overall success of the university's sports programs.
The Sports Coordinator is expected to ensure that all sporting activities are conducted safely, professionally, and in line with university policies. The role also involves supervising staff and students, preparing reports, supporting recruitment processes, and contributing to the development of sports initiatives that promote excellence, teamwork, and student well-being.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Sports Coordinator will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
2.1 Sports Program Planning and Supervision
The successful candidate will:
Plan, organize, and coordinate sports activities throughout the academic year.
Supervise students during training sessions, competitions, and other sports-related activities.
Monitor coaches to ensure that all training programs follow the university's approved schedules.
Ensure that sports programs are implemented effectively and meet the institution's objectives.
Promote student participation in various sporting activities.
Ensure all sporting activities comply with university policies and safety regulations.
Evaluate sports programs regularly and recommend improvements where necessary.
2.2 Student Support and Athlete Development
The Sports Coordinator will:
Encourage students to actively participate in sports and recreational activities.
Support student athletes in achieving both academic and sporting excellence.
Identify talented students and recommend opportunities for further development.
Guide students on sports participation requirements and university expectations.
Promote discipline, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship among student athletes.
Work closely with coaches to monitor athletes' progress and performance.
2.3 Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting
The role requires the employee to:
Collect accurate data relating to sports participation and performance.
Maintain records of competitions, training sessions, and sporting events.
Analyze sports statistics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual departmental reports.
Present findings that support planning and decision-making within the department.
Maintain updated databases for athletes, teams, and sports programs.
2.4 Sports Facilities and Equipment Management
The Sports Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that sports facilities and equipment remain in good condition by:
Monitoring the condition of sports fields, courts, and other facilities.
Ensure facilities are safe, clean, and ready for use.
Participate in the procurement of sports equipment and supplies.
Inspect equipment regularly to ensure safety and functionality.
Maintain inventory records for sports equipment.
Report damaged or missing equipment promptly.
Coordinate repairs and maintenance of sports facilities when required.
2.5 Staff Supervision and Development
The successful candidate will:
Support the recruitment and selection of qualified sports staff and coaches.
Participate in interviewing and evaluating potential candidates.
Assist in orienting newly recruited staff.
Supervise coaches and sports support staff.
Monitor staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
Encourage professional growth through training and development opportunities.

2.6 Sports Scholarship Coordination
The Sports Coordinator will:
Participate in identifying students who qualify for sports scholarships.
Provide recommendations during the scholarship selection process.
Assess applicants based on sports performance and eligibility criteria.
Monitor scholarship recipients to ensure they continue meeting university requirements.
Support scholarship students in balancing academic and sporting commitments.
2.7 Event Planning and Coordination
The employee will also:
Organize internal and external sports competitions.
Coordinate university participation in inter-university tournaments.
Prepare schedules for sporting events and competitions.
Liaise with officials, referees, coaches, and participating teams.
Ensure sporting events are conducted safely and efficiently.
Evaluate the success of sports events and prepare reports.
2.8 Communication and Collaboration
The Sports Coordinator will:
Maintain effective communication with students, coaches, university management, and external stakeholders.
Respond to inquiries related to sports activities and university programs.
Prepare reports, presentations, and correspondence when required.
Promote university sports programs through appropriate communication channels.
Build positive relationships with sports organizations and community partners.
2.9 Compliance and Safety
The successful candidate will:

3. Minimum Academic Qualifications
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management, Sports Science, Physical Education, Recreation Management, or another related field from a recognized institution.
Additional professional certifications in sports management, coaching, or event management will be an added advantage.
4. Work Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of relevant work experience in sports management, sports administration, or a related field.
At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
Experience organizing sporting events and coordinating sports programs.
Experience managing sports facilities and equipment.
Experience working with students, coaches, or educational institutions will be an added advantage.
