Mathematics Teacher – Upper Primary

Strathmore School is seeking a qualified, motivated, and passionate Mathematics Teacher to join its Upper Primary team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging Mathematics lessons within the Competency Based Education (CBE) curriculum. The role focuses on helping learners develop strong mathematical skills through practical activities, active participation, creative thinking, and problem-solving.

The ideal candidate should have a genuine interest in Mathematics and enjoy creating a positive learning environment where learners are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop confidence in solving mathematical problems.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching Mathematics

The Mathematics Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering effective lessons that meet the requirements of the CBE curriculum and relevant syllabus.

Key duties will include:

• Delivering engaging Mathematics lessons to Upper Primary learners.

• Following the approved CBE curriculum and syllabus.

• Using learner-centred teaching approaches that encourage participation.

• Helping learners understand mathematical concepts through practical examples.

• Encouraging learners to develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

• Assessing learner understanding and adjusting teaching approaches where necessary.

• Creating a classroom environment that supports learning and active participation.

• Maintaining high academic standards in Mathematics.

The teacher should be able to make Mathematics accessible and interesting by connecting classroom concepts to practical situations that learners can understand.

2. Lesson Planning and Learning Materials

The successful candidate will be expected to prepare adequately for lessons and ensure that teaching resources are available and appropriate.

Responsibilities will include:

• Preparing lesson plans and schemes of work as required.

• Developing or identifying suitable learning materials.

• Preparing classroom activities that support the CBE approach.

• Organising resources for practical and problem-solving activities.

• Maintaining professional teaching records and documentation.

• Keeping assessment records accurate and up to date.

• Reviewing learner performance to identify areas that require additional attention.

Good preparation will be important in ensuring that lessons are structured, engaging, and aligned with the learning objectives.

3. Active and Problem-Solving Learning

A key part of the role will be helping learners develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

The teacher will be expected to:

• Engage learners in hands-on mathematical activities.

• Use practical examples to explain mathematical concepts.

• Encourage learners to explore different approaches to solving problems.

• Promote independent thinking and creativity.

• Provide opportunities for learners to work individually and in groups.

• Encourage learners to explain how they arrived at their answers.

• Create activities that challenge learners while remaining appropriate for their level.

The aim is to help learners move beyond memorizing procedures and develop a deeper understanding of Mathematics.

4. Supporting Learners with Learning Gaps

The Mathematics Teacher will play an important role in identifying and supporting learners who may require additional academic assistance.

This will involve:

• Identifying areas where individual learners are struggling.

• Providing targeted learning support.

• Developing appropriate interventions to address learning gaps.

• Monitoring learner progress after additional support is provided.

• Working with colleagues where further intervention may be required.

• Encouraging learners and building their confidence in Mathematics.

The teacher should demonstrate patience and understanding when supporting learners who require additional time or alternative explanations.

5. Classroom Management

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a well-organised and positive classroom environment.

Responsibilities will include:

6. Assessment and Learner Progress

The teacher will monitor learner performance and use assessment information to improve teaching and learning.

Key duties will include:

• Assessing learners regularly.

• Reviewing learner performance and identifying areas for improvement.

• Providing constructive feedback.

• Keeping accurate assessment records.

• Adjusting lesson plans based on learner performance.

• Supporting learners in preparing for relevant assessments.

• Communicating relevant learner progress to the appropriate members of the school team.

Experience in preparing learners for the Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment (KPSEA) will be an added advantage.

7. Co-Curricular Activities

The Mathematics Teacher will also be expected to contribute to the wider school programme.

This may include:

• Supporting school sports activities through coaching.

• Taking responsibility for or supporting a school club.

• Participating in school events and activities.

• Encouraging learners to develop talents and interests outside the classroom.

• Supporting teamwork, discipline, and leadership through co-curricular activities.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. A Diploma or University Degree in Education.

2. Mathematics must be one of the teaching subjects.

3. A minimum grade of C+ at O-Level, KCSE, or an equivalent qualification.

4. At least three years of teaching experience.

5. Valid registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

6. A valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

7. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Candidates should ensure that their professional registration and required documentation are valid and available when applying.

Desirable Experience

Experience preparing learners for the Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment (KPSEA) will be an added advantage.

Candidates who have previously taught Upper Primary Mathematics and are familiar with competency-based learning approaches may be particularly well suited to the role.

Experience using practical, learner-centred, and problem-solving approaches in Mathematics will also be beneficial.
