Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Underwriter to support the underwriting function by evaluating risks, processing insurance applications, and making informed underwriting decisions in accordance with established company policies and underwriting guidelines. The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Underwriting Manager to ensure efficient day-to-day operations, maintain service standards, and contribute to the profitability and growth of the insurance portfolio.
The role requires strong analytical abilities, excellent customer service skills, and a solid understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, policy administration, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing insurance applications, approving policies within authorized limits, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring adherence to underwriting procedures and industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Underwriting and Risk Assessment
The Underwriter will be responsible for assessing risks and making sound underwriting decisions that support the company's business objectives.
Key duties include:
Review and evaluate insurance applications submitted by clients and intermediaries.
Assess risk profiles and determine eligibility for insurance coverage.
Analyze client information, supporting documents, and risk-related data.
Make underwriting decisions based on established underwriting guidelines.
Determine appropriate coverage limits, policy terms, conditions, and premiums.
Prepare and review insurance quotations in line with underwriting standards.
Approve new business applications, policy renewals, and endorsements within assigned authority limits.
Recommend alternative coverage options where risks require special consideration.
Escalate complex or high-risk cases to senior management for further review.
Ensure underwriting decisions support portfolio profitability and sustainability.
Monitor risk exposure levels and recommend risk mitigation measures where necessary.
Evaluate policy performance and recommend suitable renewal terms.
2. Policy Administration and Data Management
The successful candidate will ensure accurate policy processing and maintenance of underwriting records.
Responsibilities include:
Input and update customer information within underwriting systems.
Verify the accuracy and completeness of policy data before approval.
Process new policies, renewals, endorsements, and policy amendments.
Review policy documentation to ensure correctness and compliance.
Maintain accurate records of underwriting transactions.
Ensure premiums are calculated and charged correctly.
Update customer records and policy information promptly.
Monitor workflow to ensure timely processing of underwriting requests.
Assist in maintaining organized electronic and physical records.

3. Customer Service and Relationship Management

6. Compliance and Regulatory Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Insurance, Finance, Economics, Risk Management, or a related field.
Diploma in Insurance or active pursuit of professional insurance qualifications.
Membership with the Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK).
Additional insurance-related certifications will be an added advantage.
Experience Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of experience in underwriting within the insurance industry.
