Community Health Assistant (CHA)

Job Purpose/Objective

The Community Health Assistant (CHA) supports the provision of primary healthcare services within the community. The role covers immunization, health education, maternal and child health, disease prevention and strengthening referrals between households and health facilities. The CHA also coordinates and supervises Community Health Promoters (CHPs), supports implementation of the Kenya Community Health Strategy, and ensures proper community health data management and reporting. The position reports to the Health Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Service Delivery and Health Promotion

• Provide basic community healthcare services, including immunization, health education and support in managing common conditions such as malaria and diarrhea.

• Promote maternal and child health services, including antenatal and postnatal care and breastfeeding.

• Educate households on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, safe water practices and other healthy behaviors.

• Conduct household visits for health education, disease surveillance and prevention activities.

• Organize and support community dialogue days, action days and health campaigns.

• Encourage community members to access preventive services such as family planning and safe water interventions.

Community Mobilization and Engagement

• Work with Community Health Committees (CHCs), CHPs and other stakeholders to implement health work plans and strategies.

• Promote community involvement in health programs and facilitate appropriate referrals between households and health facilities.

• Collaborate with local leaders, NGOs and Ministry of Health structures to improve community health outcomes.

• Conduct follow-up visits for clients who have defaulted from immunization, HIV, nutrition or chronic disease services.

Supervision and Capacity Building

• Supervise and support CHPs while ensuring appropriate household allocation and clear understanding of their responsibilities.

• Organize and provide training, mentorship and on-the-job support to CHPs.

• Develop training content and contribute to training manuals in collaboration with the CHP team.

• Ensure annual CHP training and biannual supervision activities are properly implemented.

Data Management and Reporting

• Maintain complete and accurate records of community-level health services.

• Ensure health data is collected, compiled and submitted accurately and on time using approved MOH tools and digital reporting platforms.

• Analyze community health data and use findings to monitor performance and support decision-making.

• Prepare and submit regular reports to the health facility and relevant stakeholders.

Program Implementation and Coordination

• Support implementation and expansion of the national community health strategy.

• Coordinate community health action plans and participate in program reviews and health surveys.

• Attend facility meetings and provide input and guidance on community health matters.

• Participate in camp-wide health surveys and intersectoral coordination activities.

Other Duties

• Perform any other responsibilities assigned by the Health Manager or Program Manager in support of health programming.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

• Diploma in Community Health, Public Health, Environmental Health or a related discipline.

• Registration with a recognized regulatory body.

Experience and Competencies

• At least 2 years of experience in community health or public health.

• Demonstrated experience working with or supporting the Ministry of Health in implementing the Kenya Community Health Strategy and Community Health Policy is mandatory.

• Ability to develop community engagement and Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) strategies that promote positive and sustainable community-level change.

• Strong understanding of the functions and operations of the Ministry of Health and county health departments.

• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

• Strong teamwork skills, cultural awareness and the ability to adapt to challenging working environments.

• Previous experience working in low-resource communities or refugee settings is an added advantage.
